Workroom & Home offices

More and more people work at home at least one day a week. This places heavy demands on the layout of the home office, which has now become a more important part of the home.

The best working light is daylight. Daylight is not only good for the eyes, it is also good for our frame of mind and our energy levels.

Position the light correctly

Daylight is best utilised by placing the workstation close to a window. A skylight is the best solution with its even distribution of light providing the best conditions for reading both on the screen and on paper.

It should be possible to draw the curtains or pull down the Venetian blinds of all the windows to be able to see the text on the computer when the daylight is very strong. Light intensity at a computer workstation should be between 200 and 300 lux. It is slightly less for normal office work. The light should not be directed at the computer screen or at the person working.

Ceiling lighting in the workroom should be soft and supplemented by a table lamp, preferably with a flexible arm that can be adjusted as needed. The table lamp should be placed on the side of the desk opposite the hand you write with to avoid shading the light.

Good lighting in dark spaces

  • Remember to make the most of the daylight in your home office, and then you will enjoy your deskwork.
  • Ensure that the lighting is even but not too strong in the room.
  • A very light wall or window behind or in front of you makes it hard to work at a computer screen. If there is a bright light source behind you it will cause glare due to the backlighting, while one in front will cause reflections.
  • Use Venetian blinds or curtains to screen out the light if it is too bright and sharp.
  • Glare and reflections from the computer screen tire the eyes. Place a mirror on the main work surfaces - for example on top of your desk, on the keyboard and in front of the screen, and test the entire surface. If you can see any light sources in the mirror, the lighting is incorrect. Move the screen and repeat the test.
  • Use the view from the window, interior decoration or play with various lighting effects to create diversions and inspiration between your tasks.
